Who to call in a crisis
What causes a crisis is best dealt with before it becomes a crisis... and an important part of all the services listed in this guide is to try and prevent things getting this bad. But sometimes this may not be enough, and a young person may be at risk.
Overdose Call 999 – ask for an ambulance or, if quicker, take person straight to Accident and Emergency Department at nearest hospital. Self harm Take person to Accident and Emergency or contact GP/family doctor depending on severity – if in doubt, go to whichever is closest. If immediate medical attention needed, call 999 and ask for an ambulance. If a young person is at risk due to domestic violence or abuse or any other kind of abuse, call the police on 999If you feel suicidal... It’s important to talk to someone you trust, for example, a family member, friend, teacher. Tell your doctor who will help you get the support you need, or you can call the Samaritans: 08457 90 90 90 The Samaritans are there for you 24 hours a day You can email the Samaritans if you don’t feel able to talk: jo@samaritans.org For more info about the support they can offer, go to: www.samaritans.org. If you are worried about yourself or someone you know who is depressed or not coping with life you can also call HOPELineUK 0800 068 41 41 for practical advice on what to do. The helpline is open Mon to Fri 10am-5pm and 7pm-10pm and at weekends 2pm-5pm. Other rough times – the directory section lists lots of organisations/websites and helplines, some of which specialise in supporting you through particular rough times – like those mentioned already and also things like bereavement, anxiety, phobias, racism, discrimination, problems with friends/family/school, drugs, alcohol, housing, etc, etc.
